Understand open rates and opens

Opens indicate that Mailix recorded open activity for a Campaign email. This metric is useful for comparing engagement, but it is not an absolute measure of how many people read the email.

How is the open rate calculated?

Open rate = Number of unique Subscribers who opened ÷ Number of Delivered sends

A Subscriber who opens the same email multiple times is still counted only once in the open rate. The open log may still display multiple events for that person.

Understand open rates and opens — reportDelivered means a send that Mailix recorded as successful, not confirmation that the message reached the inbox. When there are no Delivered sends, the open rate is 0.

Open the open log

Open the Campaign report and select Sending logs → Open log. You can:

  • search by email address;
  • sort by time;
  • view the Subscriber, network address, recorded location, and open time;
  • open the Subscriber profile when the record still exists;
  • go from a location in the log to Open map.

Each row is one open event. Therefore, the number of rows in the log may be higher than the Opened count in the overview.

How does open tracking affect the data?

Mailix records opens only for emails sent with open tracking. If tracking is disabled:

  • the send is still counted under Delivered;
  • open activity for that send is not recorded;
  • the overall open rate may be lower because the denominator still includes those Delivered sends.

Data recorded before the tracking setting was changed is not converted into unopened activity.

Why are opens not perfectly accurate?

Recording an open depends on tracking content being loaded when the recipient views the email. If the email application does not load that content, Mailix may not record the open. Conversely, an email application's privacy protection or content preloading may create open activity that does not accurately reflect when the recipient read the message.

Therefore, interpret the open rate together with clicks, bounces, and unsubscribes instead of treating it as the only evidence.

Opens on the map

Map → Open map displays only events with valid location data. The number of points on the map may be lower than the number of Subscribers who opened.

The location is inferred from the event's network information, not GPS location, and is not guaranteed to be the recipient's home or precise location.

When is open data updated?

The logs may display new activity before the overview cards. On Overview, check the update time and use the refresh button when needed. Do not treat the overview counts as real-time data.

Frequently asked questions

How is one person who opens three times counted?

The open rate counts that person once; Open log may record multiple events.

Does no opens mean that nobody read the email?

No. Tracking may have been disabled, or the email application may not have loaded the tracking content.

Is the number of points on the map the number of opens?

No. The map includes only events whose coordinates can be determined; the Opened card is the number of unique Subscribers.
